DESCRIPTION:Are you reevaluating aspects of your faith in an effort to (re)
consider what you believe? This is the process of deconstruction\, and man
y people of faith today are expressing their doubts\, asking hard question
s\, and exploring how faith meets life in our journey on this earth. This
book club is a safe space to express those uncertainties and to find other
s who are on a similar journey.\n\n\nWe will meet on Wednesday\, October 2
 1st @ 6:30 p.m. at CrossRoads\, which is located at 708 N. Main St. We wil
l have a light snack (provided) followed by a conversation over the conten
t of As a Woman: What I Learned about Power\, Sex\, and the Patriarchy Af
ter I Transitioned by Paula Stone Williams. Here is a brief overview of t
 he book:\n\n\n\n"As a father of three\, married to a wonderful woman\, and
holding several prominent jobs within the Christian community\, Dr. Paula
Stone Williams made the life-changing decision to physically transition f
rom male to female at the age of sixty. Almost instantly\, her power and i
nfluence in the evangelical world disappeared and her family had to grappl
e with intense feelings of loss and confusion.\n"Feeling utterly alone aft
er being expelled from the evangelical churches she had once spearheaded\,
Paula struggled to create a new safe space for herself where she could re
concile her faith\, her identity\, and her desire to be a leader. Much to
her surprise\, the key to her new career as a woman came with a deeper awa
reness of the inequities she had overlooked before her transition. Where h
er opinions were once celebrated and amplified\, now she found herself sid
elined and ignored. New questions emerged. Why are women’s opinions deva
lued in favor of men’s? Why does love and intimacy feel so different? An
d\, was it possible to find a new spirituality in her own image?\n"In As a
  Woman\, Paula’s “critical questions about gender\, personhood\, and p
lace are relevant to anyone. Her writing insightfully reveals aspects of o
ur gender socialization and culture that often go unexamined\, but that ne
ed to be talked about\, challenged\, and changed” (Soraya Chemaly\, auth
or of Rage Becomes Her) in order to fully understand what it means to be m
 ale\, female\, and simply\, human."\n\n\nReading the book is not a require
ment to attending or participating. In addition\, the book club is open to
people of any faith or no faith at all. You do not need to be a part of C
rossRoads to attend this event. It is open to the public and anyone who wo
uld like to join with us.\n\n\nFor those that are unable to attend in pers
on\, we invite you to read the book with us. You can share your thoughts a
nd questions with Patrick Wilson to be shared with the group at the book c
lub meeting and/or set up a one-on-one time to visit about the book in per
son\, over the phone\, or through chat/text. We'd love your input on the b
ook and how it challenges and shapes your faith journey.
